The Study

Mr. Leonard’s study was a lavish and chaotic spectacle. Wine colored satin wing-back chairs with brass tacks and mahogany trim, filled with teetering stacks of moldy books and loose papers. Floor to ceiling oak bookcases covered each of two opposing walls, thick volumes of all manner of subjects haphazardly discarded back to the shelves in no discernible order; Some still half pulled out (or put back in) and ripped pages shoved into the nooks and crannies, bulging out like the belly of a man whose trousers were two sizes too small. Several opulent rugs from the Orient and the Far East covered his African Blackwood floors, speckled with tea stains and biscuit crumbs.
